Caring for the Earth means we are caring for ourselves, we are caring for others, and we are caring for future generations. On 13 October, Fikizolo Primary School and Usiba Creative Arts hosted a creative arts performance to promote environmental management in Makhanda through Drama, Music, Poetry and Art.

Fikizolo Primary School principal Zoleka Kate welcomed everyone, saying that she’s delighted that the school has well-respected community members participating in the school, referring to Reverend Nokuzola Gitywa Usiba Creative Arts organisation founder and other prominent community members. Kate added that the initiative will add to the holistic development of the learners, as it may add to their school performance.

Learners were given a chance to participate in different art performances to share awareness of the importance of keeping the environment clean. Drama learners made a short-acting performance about cleaning the town. Some acted as cleaners. However, their jobs are made difficult by residents who keep littering and creating illegal dumping sites, which add to the town’s uncleanliness.

Poetry learners took the audience back to the days when the town was clean and people respected environmental laws, thus emphasising that people must start taking accountability for their responsibility in keeping the town clean.
