Last U3A lecture for 2021: the curious story of Elizabeth Salt

The Elizabeth Salt monument in High Street. The monument is dedicated to settler women and portrays Elizabeth Salt carrying a keg of gunpowder through the ranks of amaXhosa warriors during the battle of Grahamstown. The story goes that during the battle of Grahamstown, when the English troops had run out of gunpowder, Elizabeth Salt carried a keg of gunpowder disguised as a baby to them while the amaXhosa warriors let her pass through their ranks unharmed because she was a woman. The monument was defaced in 2015, including a trail of red spray paint from the keg of gunpowder to the feet of the amaXhosa warriors.

In the University of the Third Age’s (U3A) last meeting for the year at 10 am on Thursday 2 December, Pat Irwin will recount the curious story of Elizabeth Salt – she of the monument in High Street.

Eskom permitting, Pat will be illustrating his account with images.

Another piece of good news is that when the U3A meets again in mid-January, speakers shall have a lapel microphone – a great advantage for those of us whose ears are no longer as sharp as once they were.

Already there is the start of a queue of speakers lining up for 2022.
