The African National Congress (ANC) has won 11 of the 14 ward seats in the local municipal elections, with votes still being counted in a close contest in Ward 14.

But the ANC’s overall support has dropped from 61.84% in 2016 to 50.65%, an 18.1% reduction in voting support.

The big winner in the election is the Makana Citizens Front (MCF), which captured 18.1% of the total vote on its first outing at the polls.

The Democratic Alliance retained its seats in Ward 4 and Ward 8, but saw its overall support drop from just under 30% in 2016 to 17.1% this year.

Voter turnout was a disappointing 44.18% for Makana, with just 19 317 of the 43 664 eligible voters casting their vote on Monday.
