As of Monday 11 October, just under 64% of Makana’s adult population were fully vaccinated.

This means that Makana is the most vaccinated sub-district in the entire Eastern Cape by some distance. And according to health MEC Nomakhosazana Meth, Makana was likely “among the safest in the entire country”.

A whopping 40 519 of all targeted adults in the district have received at least one dose – or 73% of the targeted population.

Over 100% of the targeted 60+ adults in the district are fully vaccinated (8 351 out of 8 152 adults targeted).

An equally impressive 98% of 50-59 year-olds are fully vaccinated (7 490 out of 7 631).

By contrast, only 49% of targeted 18-49 year-olds are fully vaccinated (19 340 out of 39 388). But, many people in this age group have received the first dose of the Pfizer vaccine.

Makana’s impressive statistics are in stark contrast to the 34.4% of South African adults who have had at least one jab. Just under 40% of Eastern Cape adults have had at least one jab, just behind the top-performing Western Cape (43.3%). Mpumalanga is the worst-performing province at 27.6%.
