BY MATTHEW PETERSEN

Rhodes student media organisation Activate has an impressive sports section with its own Fantasy Premier League (FPL) mini-league, which started as a league for students but has opened up to all Makhanda residents interested in playing the game.

For those who don’t know the game, FPL is an online interactive game based on the events of real-life Premier League matches. Managers select a pool of 15 players with a 100m budget for their squad that they can use to select players from Premier League teams, with players’ real-life performances earning managers points for their FPL teams. Managers can make transfers each week throughout the season to change their squad.

This is my 10th season playing FPL, and each year throws up new challenges that make the game fun to play. I have discovered that FPL has created a community of players who develop bonds and relationships off playing the game. FPL is a way to bring the international game to local communities for all to enjoy.

If anyone is interested in joining the Activate FPL league, the code for the league is 9il0ok. For any more information relating to FPL, whether wanting to start playing or in need of any advice or just any general thoughts about playing FPL, don’t hesitate to contact me via email at matthewpetersen4@gmail.com, and I will be more than willing to help anyone out.
