Sophia Young Stars finished in the top four in the Eastern Cape at the Engen U18 knockout football tournament in Gqeberha last weekend.

They had to dig deep in the first game to bounce back from a goal down to level matters and eventually won 5-4 on penalties.

Glenville were their next opponents in the quarter-finals. Sophia scored the game’s only goal in the second half to book their place in the last four.

On Sunday, they came unstuck against a powerful Real Buffaloes side in the semi-final. They produced an outstanding performance, but unfortunately, it was not enough to see them through as they suffered a 2-0 defeat and ended their hopes of proceeding to the final.

Club chairperson Lindisipho Swaartbooi praised the players for the good fight and commitment they showed. “I think our boys gave an excellent account of themselves and learnt a lot in the process and will take the lessons and use them to taķe the team forward. I would also like to thank Pick n Pay and everyone who helped us in this trip.”

Makhanda football lovers should applaud these young boys for this great effort. Finishing amongst the top four in the Eastern Cape is a big achievement.
