We are once again approaching puppy and kitten season and the festive season of giving will shortly be upon us. Animals should not be given as presents: they are a huge commitment for any person and or family and it is vitally important that anyone taking any animal on understands this.

The financial burden alone is one which should always be considered, as this includes not only food and water, but also paying for annual vet visits, vaccinations and or other unforeseen private veterinary costs. This is in addition to the time, love and care any animal needs, which will impact hugely upon any lifestyle.

Here at the SPCA we encounter daily individuals who have not considered this when taking on a pet and as such are unable to provide the care that animal deserves.

As a society who supports responsible pet ownership and is dedicated to animal welfare the SPCA appeals to people to not give animals away for free. Rather hand them in at your local SPCA and trust in us to adopt them out to loving homes responsibly, after ensuring that the adopting family are able to provide all that the animal requires.

In addition, should you be considering a new pet, please visit your local SPCA and adopt: this is the greatest gift you can ever give an animal and you will be assisting us in helping all those animals who desperately need us.

The drought issue is still a very real problem in Grahamstown and the surrounding areas, and it is vitally important that all your animals also have access to the water they need.

For more information and or advice on animal care, please do not hesitate to contact the Grahamstown SPCA or one of the friendly vets in town.
