The Albany Bowling Club’s Men’s Fours team were the deserving winners of the Eastern Areas Men’s Fours championship on Sunday 4 November, after defeating Kowie BC in the final round. The Albany’s Women’s team were unfortunate to lose out in their respective final; however, they earned their runners-up medals.

Despite losing in the opening round of the tournament at the Kenton Bowling Club in late October, the Albany Men’s team bounced back to earn a further two victories back-to-back. Their section rivals, Kowie BC, had also won two matches; however the Albany team topped their section due to a more favourable shot profit score of +26 compared to that of Kowie, which was +11.

The section standings set up a clash between Albany and Kowie for the weekend of 3-4 November at Albany Bowling Club. Both teams came into the match looking to continue their form, making for a very tense match. Albany came back from a 5-15 deficit to ultimately bring home their first ever EA Men’s Fours title by defeating Kowie 27-21.

Marlene Mitchener, from the Albany Bowling Club, was full of praise for the team that consisted of Peter Heynes, Clive Bartlett, Mario Agnew and Billy Krige. Albany have never won this title before, so this is a very exciting time for the club, and as one of the smallest clubs in Eastern Areas this is an outstanding achievement,” said Mitchener.

“The players’ committement and the incredible support that the team received from the spectators made all the difference,” said Mitchener. “This victory is another feather in our cap  and has created a positive vibe among our bowlers.”
