This weekend, the Diocesan School for Girls (DSG) is hosting their annual Invitational U14 Hockey Tournament – the premier U14 school girl hockey event in the country.

This year, no fewer than 14 of the top U14 school girl hockey teams in South Africa will be descending on Grahamstown (Makhanda) to fight for top honours, with defending champions Collegiate back to reclaim their title.

DSG Director of Sport, Chris Hibbert, is anticipating another successful event. “It is wonderful to be hosting this prestigious tournament again, and to have so much interest from around the country. We have a number of new schools attending this year, in the form of St Mary’s Waverly (Johannesburg), Oranje (Bloemfontein), Bloemhof (Stellenbosch), Oakhill (Knysna), St Cyprian’s (Cape Town), Somerset College (Somerset West), as well as Woodridge College and Pearson from the Eastern Cape.”

“These schools will compete with the returning teams from Collegiate (PE), Clarendon (EL), York (Western Cape), Springfield Convent (Cape Town), with Victoria Girls’ and DSG representing our home town. We expect a wonderful standard of hockey to be played, as we have some superb South African hockey schools joining us this year. As always, the focus of this event is on player development and enjoyment and while there is a title and a trophy up for grabs, ensuring a wonderful experience for all the teams is the most important part of hosting an event like this,” said Hibbert.

The event will take place in Grahamstown (Makhanda) from 10-12 August, with matches being played at both the DSG and Kingswood College Astroturfs. The fixtures and pool details can be found at www.dsghockeyfestival.co.za.
