Diocesan School for Girls (DSG) hosted Queenstown Girls High and Balmoral on Saturday 4 August for an exciting series of hockey matches. The matches started early, with clear skies and a great atmosphere on the fields.
DSG Juniors proved to be very strong throughout the day, winning the majority of hockey games. The U10 group walked away with impressive wins, with the U10 A’s winning 3-1, and the U10 B’s winning 6-1. In the U11 category, the U11 A’s won 4-1, the U11 B’s 5-2.
The most anticipated matches were the U13 group. The U13 C won by a wide margin, winning 4-0. Unfortunately, only the U13 B lost to Balmoral 0-1.
The U13 A team were up against Balmoral, where they displayed great teamwork and skill. Balmoral showed much determination, but they were no match for the strong DSG defence. With Wendy Mae Turner and Kayleigh Clayton scoring the goals, the U13 A dominated throughout the whole game thus resulting in their 2-0 victory.
“They played amazingly as a team and I am very proud of them,” said coach Cathy Munro. “They played a fantastic game and ended off a great season.”
The junior netball games of the day also proved to be exciting. Collectively, the junior group won five out of their eight games. The U10 A team won an impressive 10-3, and the U10 B won 6-2. The U11 A won 10-3, while the U11 B faced a narrow 5-8 loss. In the U12 category, the U12 A lost 1-5, however the U12 B dominated their game, winning 4-0. The U13 A lost by a tight 10-11 to Balmoral, while the U13 B secured an equally tight 9-8 win.
Overall it was a great end to the winter season, with DSG dominating throughout. Sports Co-ordinator, Patti Tooley, appealed to “all girls to stay fit during the long August holidays”, as the Independent Schools trail running and athletics events commence in the new term.
