Woodridge College and Preparatory schools travelled to Grahamstown on Saturday 14 July to take part in the annual winter sports derby between the two schools. With 18 hockey and 15 netball fixtures played from U10 through to U18 levels, it was a very busy day at Diocesan School for Girls. The day was a cold and wintery affair, but thankfully the rain held off long enough to get all the netball fixtures played, with only the last couple of hockey matches battling through the elements.

On the results front, DSG dominated the majority of the fixtures, winning six of the eight senior hockey matches, with one match drawn. However, it was the first team game where Woodridge came out on top, as they secured a 1-0 victory away from home against their more fancied opponents. Once again for Woodridge, the brilliance of SA U18 player and captain, Edith Molikoe, shone through. She not only thwarted the many DSG attacks, but was also on hand to convert a penalty corner with style midway through the first half, which proved to be the decisive blow. Woodridge continued to repel all the DSG attacks in the second half and carried their team to a hard fought 1-0 victory.

The netball was a similar affair, with DSG coming out on top in the majority of the matches, winning all bar one of the seven matches played in the senior school fixture. Again, it was the first team match which provided the most excitement. DSG went out to an early lead, however Woodridge fought back and although at one stage were trailing by five goals, managed to secure a 16-16 score line by the final whistle to draw the match.

DSG will host Herschel from Cape Town this coming weekend, before going away to Kingsridge Girls in King Williams Town on 28 July. DSG will then host Queenstown Girls High School on 4 August to finish off their winter programme.
