The Belmont Golf Club ladies will host the Port Alfred ladies in the 50th anniversary of the Picture Match golf day on Tuesday 28 November, tee-off from 11am.

The Port Alfred ladies are defending their title and the picture will be brought to Grahamstown for the prize giving.

Joyce Heny, a member of the Port Alfred golf club said: “Because we were not able to participate in league in those days and so never had a team match-play experience (and this applied to Grahamstown as well) I thought it would be a good idea to play each other twice a year, alternating venues”.

While the first match or two were played without a trophy, Heny came up with the idea of agreeing to purchase a picture and sharing the costs. “They were agreeable so I set about looking for a suitable one” she said.

Richard John  Allen Coates a local artist heard about the picture trophy idea and he offered to paint a seascape and donate it to the two women’s sections (Port Alfred and Grahamstown).

The picture match began in 1967 and the painting was introduced as the “trophy” in 1968.
