Teacher, artist and author Lorraine Mullins was last Friday honoured by St Andrew’s Preparatory School for his decades of service to the school by naming its centre for creative learning after him.
Lorraine, a well-known and respected figure in Grahamstown, spent his first four years of primary school at St Andrew’s Preparatory before moving to The Ridge in Johannesburg. He completed his secondary school at St Andrew’s College. After concluding his studies at Rhodes University, he moved to England where he taught at The Dragon School in Oxford.
Lorraine returned to teach at Prep, where he was first appointed as Housemaster and later served as Second Master from 1966 to 1997. He is a skilled watercolour artist and has written a comprehensive history of the Prep school, “I’ll sing you One-Oh!”. Not one to slow to a standstill after retirement, Lorraine has served on the St Andrew’s Prep Board as member and later as Chairman. He now runs the Prep Archives with his own team of volunteers, taking care of precious memories.
The Lorraine Mullins Creative Learning Centre, the first new educational facility to be built on a green site at Prep in over three decades, was the brainchild of former Head of Prep, Gareth Allman. The Centre was designed by Thembela Architects with flexibility and modern, relevant educational programmes in mind. It houses all Project-Based Learning activities, has beautiful spaces for Visual Art lessons as well as Science and Biology practicals. Other areas accommodate lessons in Design and Technology, robotics, coding and Makerspace. The Centre will also benefit Childrens’ Arts Festival-goers and the new ArtReach programme for Good Shepherd School pupils.
