St Andrew’s College hosted Pearson High School and Grey High School for the annual pre-season water polo fixtures on Saturday (16 September).

The day started with some heavy rain but that did not deter the polo players as the St Andrew’s teams headed into their 1st round fixtures against Pearson.

The results were as follows:

The St Andrew’s 1st team match against Pearson started slowly with both teams trading attacks but none able to yield any goals. Into the 2nd, 3rd and 4th chukkas, St Andrew’s started to press forward and scored some brilliant team goals. There were also some moments of brilliance from Wesley Williams and Andrew van Vuuren that set the stage for a strong finish by the home team. The final score was 13-2.

The 2nd round of fixtures against Grey were always going to be extremely tough but the St Andrew’s team’s showed true spirit to compete.

Buoyed by the official opening of the new pavilion at the water polo pool, the St Andrew’s first team started there match with huge intensity going 2-0 up in a matter of 4 minutes. Grey were never going to go down easy and managed to take advantage of some untimely mistakes to claw their way back into the match at three-all. Both teams traded goals with Grey going into the last 40 seconds with a 6-5 lead. St Andrew’s dug deep and with a superb exclusion by Andrew van Vuuren, Christopher Bennett slotted the man up advantage to draw the game six-all.
