Fourteen teams of women bowlers will be on the greens at Grahamstown’s Albany Bowling Club, to compete in the annual Inter Sub-districts bowling tournament. Teams from East London and district, Ciskei, North Eastern districts, Frontier, Midlands and hosts, Eastern Areas will all be taking part in the tournament that will run from mid-day today (Friday 25 August) until Sunday.

This is a prestigious bowls tournament as each district is represented by the best bowlers from all the clubs in their district.

Selectors have to choose who they think is best in each of the four positions lead, second, third and skip. They also have to consider compatibility and pick players who will be able to play together as a team.

Eastern Areas Team 1 has  Gwen Bartlett, Jackie Kriel, Wendy Pfotenhauer and Marlene Mitchener, while Team 2 comprises Jane Armitage, Maureen Heale, Marlene Jacobs and Adele Wood. The third team has June McDougal, Rina Goosen, Collette Reed and Pippa Swift.

“We wish all the chosen ladies “good bowling” and hope they have fun and successful tournament,” said Brian Aldag of the Port Alfred Bowling Club.

The tournament changes venues every year and rotates to the next district in line, with each district hosting once every seven years.

“That is why this is a golden opportunity for spectators to see some of the best bowlers in the Eastern Province in action,” said Aldag.  The full programme of events is in the Hi-Q Sports Diary.

Gwen Bartlett will be in action this weekas part of the Eastern Areas Team 1.
