The body of Port Alfred resident Gina Smith, who was reported missing on Monday 5 December, was today recovered from a vehicle that had plunged down a cliff at Woest Hill on the Southwell Road just outside Grahamstown.

Smith, 42, was last seen around 1pm on Monday 5 December.

Police spokesperson Captain Mali Govender issued a missing persons call along with her photograph and description of her vehicle – a black Fiat Pallio, registration number DWZ 271 EC.

Today, Govender said telecommunications workers in the area had alerted a local farmer to a vehicle in the gorge. The farmer had in turn notified the police.

"Rescue workers took several hours to recover the body which was several hundred metres down a cliff," Govender said.

"The cause of the incident is unknown. An inquest docket has been opened for investigation."
