Murder accused Thembani "Zion Eyes" Onceya and his five co-accused appeared in the Grahamstown magistrate's court yesterday and their case was postponed to 23 January 2017.

Magistrate Ntsoki Moni postponed the case for further investigations. The five men were arrested in October in connection with the gruesome murder of 29-year-old Thembelani Qwakanisa.

Qwakanisa's body was recovered from Zion Dam in Extension 6. Onceya, a 28-year-old third-year Anthropology student at Rhodes University applied for bail but the court denied him.

During the bail application, magistrate Lindelwa Figlan said releasing Onceya might lead to public disturbance and compromise his well-being, given the strong public sentiment regarding the case.

Since the case started in court on 12 October, members of the community have attended court appearances in large numbers.
