The Amasango Career School’s Marimba band won the Arts Exhibition Competition, an annual provincial event held at the Orient Theatre in East London, last month.

“It is now the second time for our school to take the first position in three years of the competition,” says Linda Ngamlana, principal of Amsango. “We are happy to announce that our marimba band has once again made us proud.”

The competition was hosted by the Department of Education in the Eastern Cape. “It’s a competition that focuses on and exposes children to different skills, not just academic,” says Yoliswa Dongwana, Amasango’s marimba teacher.

The band competed with other groups at the first cluster level which took place in the Port Elizabeth and Uitenhage area in August. After winning the first position, the band went on to compete at the provincial level on 23 September. They achieved first place and were presented with a trophy.

“This makes us a leading marimba band for the whole province,” says Ngamlana.

This year, the band introduced four dancers to accompany them; Phinda Phetela, Anelisiwe Hanabe, Ntombetemba Kulati and Zotando Duda.
