Local stars Nombasa and Siyanda will perform at the Village Scribe Association's annual Peace Day Concert today, Wednesday 28 September.

Every Year in September the world celebrates World Peace Day, a day instituted by the UN to commemorate and strengthen the ideals of peace.

The Village Scribe Association, a local non-profit organisation committed to promoting education through the use of technology, will also arrange its annual free Peace Day Concert this year to celebrate peace and showcase the talents of learners from local Grahamstown schools. The concert will take place at 2pm today in Noluthando Hall in Joza.

The learners who will perform their self-composed hip hop songs are all users of awarenet, an e-learning platform and social networking site developed by the Village Scribe Association.

During the past months the learners have created, uploaded and shared their own lyrics on awarenet while receiving professional musical training from Corinne Cooper of the Rhodes Music department and Zukani Budaza and Lunga Heleni of Sonic Arts Studio.

Five Groups from six schools will give live performances of their songs; Ntaba Maria, Archie Mbolekwa, Seventh Day Adventist, CM Vellem, Good Shepherd and Nombulelo High.

A panel composed of three judges will award prizes for best song, best performance and best rapper.

All songs will be recorded by Corinne Cooper at Rhodes and a CD of the concert will be produced.

The Village Scribe Association will also produce a music video with the school winning the best song category.

In addition, there will be performances from guest artists, among them local stars Nombasa and Siyanda.
