Grahamstown police spokesperson Captain Luvuyo Mjekula said the Highway Patrol members were on duty doing stop and search on the N2 when they stopped a gold Avanza coming from the direction of Peddie to Port Elizabeth.
Mjekula said inside the vehicle there were with two occupants. He said a normal procedure was done and the vehicle was searched.
"The passenger in this vehicle was the owner and the driver a hiker. Two bags with a13.3 kg weight of compressed dagga with street value of R39 900 were found.
"Both the passenger and the driver said they gave a female person a lift from Peddie to Pikoli on the N2. They said the female got out in Pikoli and ran away but they kept her bags.
"The driver then later admitted that one bag belonged to him but not the other. Both the driver and the owner were arrested," said Mjekula.
Both were coming from Mthatha and going to Jeffreys Bay and Humansdorp. Their ages are between 28 and 38.
Mjekula said they were arrested and will appear in the Grahamstownn Magistrate's court soon on charges of possession of dagga. He said the vehicle was seized by the police.
