The DR Wynne Music School at St Andrew’s/DSG will host a recital on Thursday 8 September with the Melicus Duo: Marie Vassiliou (Soprano) and Nico de Villiers (Piano) with Corinne Morris (Cello).

The recital programme will feature: F Schubert (1797-1828): Three Selected Songs (Die Forelle, Gretchen am Spinnrade, Ganymed or The Erlkönig); E Granados (1867-1916): Quejas, o la maja y el ruiseñor; F Schubert: Arpeggione Sonata D 821; A Ginastera (1916-1983): Cinco Canciones Populares Argentinas; F Schubert: Ständchen   F. Liszt (1811 – 1886) transc; A Piazzolla (1921-1992): Le Grand Tango per violoncello and piano.

The Melicus Duo consists of Marie Vassiliou and Nico de Villiers who started their collaboration in 2011. They combine their artistic attributes in both performance and education. Performances across the UK include the Buckingham Festival, Leeds Lieder+ and the Belle Époque Series at 1901 Arts Club in London. Performances further afield include performances in the Netherlands as well as the Johannesburg International Mozart Festival in South Africa. 

Marie Vassiliou studied singing and viola at the Royal College of Music, where she was awarded the prestigious Tagore Medal, as well as numerous other prizes. As a concert soloist, she has appeared at all the leading London venues under conductors including Martyn Brabbins, Andrew Davis, Edward Gardner and Clark Rundell and at festivals including Huddersfield Contemporary Music and the BBC Proms.

South African pianist Nico de Villiers is based in London and in demand as soloist, accompanist and coach in the UK as well as abroad. He holds degrees from the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland, University of Michigan and the Guildhall School of Music and Drama. Accolades include scholarships and bursaries from the Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music, the Guildhall School of Music and Drama, the Opera Awards Foundation, the Ernst Oppenheimer Memorial Trust, the Leverhulme Trust as well as the Sanlam International Opera Awards. 

Cellist Corinne Morris has a long list of professional accomplishments, including being a prizewinner of the Maria Canals International Cello Competition in Spain, and the International French Music Competition in France. Corinne was chosen by Rostropovich to perform at his festival in Evia.

She was also invited to perform and take part in the world-famous Verbier Academy in Switzerland, as well as the international Cello festival in Kronberg in Germany. Corinne has appeared throughout Europe and beyond, including chamber music performances with Schlomo Mintz at the Jerusalem Conservatory. 

Her relaunch album Macedonian Sessions recorded with the Macedonian Radio Symphony Orchestra, marks the British/French cellist’s return to the platform after a debilitating shoulder injury brought her career to a halt for over five years.
