The Grahamstown cluster of the South African Police Service (SAPS) this week welcomed a new commander in Brigadier David Mhlangenqaba Kanuka.

Police spokesperson Captain Luvuyo Mjekula said Kanuka, who comes all the way from Lusikisiki where he was station commander, officially began his duties yesterday.

“I am looking forward to working with the entire community, businesses, churches, farmers associations, traditional leaders (Peddie area), Non-government Organisations, the taxi industry, local government and all other government departments as well as the Community Policing Forum. In order to fight crime in the area of Grahamstown,” said Kanuka.

Originally from the Great Tsembeyi Administration Area in Lady Frere, the new cluster commander was warmly welcomed by the SAPS family in the Grahamstown cluster.

Hitting the ground running, Kanuka has already held meetings with other commanders in the cluster to discuss crime-fighting plans.

Previously the position was held by Brigadier Morgan Govender who moved to the equivalent position in Port Alfred.

After the departure of Govender, Colonel Noluthando Magazi was the acting cluster commander.
