Grahamstown police have sent a strong warning to the community about people who are impersonating police officers.

Police spokesperson Captain Luvuyo Mjekula said a local resident visited the Grahamstown police station yesterday to report an incident in which he alleged he had been conned by two men who impersonated police officers.

Mjekula said the resident explained that one of the two people had what appeared to be a police appointment certificate and a firearm.

"The victim allegedly lost R1 600 which he had given to them under duress. Unfortunately he did not wish to open a case.

"Members of the public are warned to be vigilant and to exercise caution and report anything they suspect to be against the law," said Mjekula.

Meanwhile, a total of 90 people were arrested in the past week for various serious and less serious offences in Grahamstown.
The crimes ranged from rape, assault, possession of drugs and shoplifting to drunk and disorderly behaviour.

Mjekula said in one serious incident, members of the Peddie Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences (FCS) unit arrested two men aged 27 and 28 for the rape of a 28-year-old woman in Peddie Extension.

He said the two allegedly raped the woman after taking her to the house of one of the suspects. They allegedly stopped her while she was on her way home last Friday.

"Unit commander Warrant Officer Headman Baneti and Constable Nozuko Booi accompanied by members of the Local Criminal Record Centre arrived at the scene in the early hours of Saturday morning.

"They found the two men who were positively identified by the victim.

"The two were arrested and appeared in the Peddie Magistrate’s Court on Monday on rape charges. Their case was postponed to next month for a formal bail application," said Mjekula.

Police in that cluster also confiscated drugs and recovered stolen vehicles in separate incidents. Mjekula said fines were issued for various traffic contraventions.
