On Wednesday 17 August police seized condoms and cigarettes from a Grahamstown high school's pupils during a search for drugs and weapons at the school.
Police spokesperson Captain Luvuyo Mjekula said teachers handed police some knives that the teachers had seized from the pupils.
In two primary schools, Mjekula said they did not find anything.
He said the schools’ staff commended the unexpected visit by the police as it would curb crime in schools.
“Management of the schools commended the Grahamstown SAPS’ Social Crime Prevention and K9 team for the random search.
“The team paid surprise visits to two school on Wednesday 17 August, searching for drugs and dangerous weapons possibly concealed by pupils.
“Carried out in a humane manner, the raid involved searching the pupils and their schoolbags and K9 unit members also utilised their dogs to search the classrooms, in the absence of the learners,” said Mjekula.
Although neither drugs nor weapons were found during the searches, police were handed two pocket knives by the principal of one of the schools.
Mjekula said the weapons had been confiscated from learners recently.
He said police also found and seized a condom, cigarette lighters and cigarettes at the high school.
Mjekula said the schools' staff praised the pro-active work of the police, hoping that it would help play a deterrent role thereby preventing crime. Police were urged by the high school staff to make the visits regular.
Mjekula said police had received similar support when they conducted searches at a primary school last week.
He said the Grahamstown SAPS management lauded the members for their efforts and co-operation with school management.
