Stormers utility back and Liverpool fan Scott van Breda admitted that the Anfield club have been a source of great frustration since he started following them in the days of Robbie Fowler and Michael Owen.

However, there have been moments when the Reds have spurred the 24-year-old on. Two former Liverpool stars and one famous night in particular have influenced his philosophy.

“I’m a big soccer fan, and I actually played a little bit when I was at Rondebosch one off season after rugby,” said van Breda, who inherited his love for Liverpool from his father.

“You pick up inspiration from small things, like Steven Gerrard playing his whole career for the club [before moving to LA Galaxy in 2015], and Jamie Carragher, and guys like that.”

“Also, [I was inspired] to believe when we beat Milan in Istanbul in 2005 that anything is possible. [Liverpool were] even 3-0 down at half-time, and they came back to win.”

“Small things like that, you often can look back on and reflect when times are going bad.”

While van Breda will be hoping that the Stormers – whom he has also supported from a young age – will win their first ever Super Rugby title in August, he will also be throwing his support behind Jürgen Klopp’s side when their season begins that month.

Liverpool share common ground with the Stormers, as they will be hoping to win their first league title in the Premier League era.
