After Saturday’s K-Day clash at City Lords – in which Kingswood College beat St. Andrew’s College 34-22 – Grocott’s Mail Sport spoke to players and coaches both sides on the game. Here’s what they had to say:

St. Andrew’s Coach, Gerry Posthumus:

“Obviously we’re disappointed, but I think we’re frustrated because we let ourselves down a little bit in the first half – conceded too many soft tries early on. It’s hard to come back from that.”

“Take nothing away from Kingswood. I think Kingswood are an outstanding side. They played very well today and they exposed our weaknesses, so hats off to them and well played to them.”

“We know how to bounce back and we will bounce back.”

St. Andrew’s hooker, James Wilson:

“It’s always disappointing when you go down on K-Day, but credit to Kingswood.”

“From U16, we always knew [Kingswood] were going to be a good side. They’ve been building this team up and they actually are a really good side this year – so coming into this game, we knew they were going to be strong and we knew who their strong players were. We just didn’t pitch up on the day, I guess.”

“Next year, we have a good U16 side coming through… and good U14A, U15A, and U16 A teams, so I think we’ll have a good team this year.”

“We have six games left [this year]. I reckon if we can put those six games to bed, then this is just going to be another game – just another loss. It’s not going to define our season. That’s what [Posthumus] told us.”

Kingswood coach, Gareth Shaw:

“As a community, this was absolutely massive, hey. We don’t win many, so for us to win two in a row… was really big for us.”

“Before the game, [I said] it was just about keeping it nice and calm and collected. We knew that if we executed it 100% on the day, we would be good, but it was just about not being overawed by the occasion before the game.”

“At half-time, we just stressed how vital it was to be the first side to score after half-time. We thought that would probably break them at that stage.”

“It was great to see our team play with the physicality that we know they capable of – and they really put that together on the day. I think once we saw the physicality we were playing with, I pretty much knew that barring one of those miracles where the other side wins it, we were probably going to sneak ahead.”
