Grahamstown police spokesperson Captain Mali Govender said the occupants of the Toyota Avanza, a man aged 50 and a woman aged 25, were arrested. The value of the drugs is approximately R400 000, he said. The suspects are due to appear in the Grahamstown Magistrates Court on a charge of possession of drugs.
Highway search
Members of the Grahamstown highway patrol were conducting a vehicle check point on the N2 at the Settlers Monument on Wednesday at 10pm when they stopped a white Nissan bakkie which was travelling from the direction of Port Elizabeth towards Grahamstown with two male occupants. During a routine search of the vehicle and occupants, two packets of mandrax, a few loose tablets and some dagga were found and seized. Only the driver, aged 57, was arrested. The total value of the drugs is approximately R8 000. The suspect will appear in the Grahamstown Magistrates court soon on two counts of possession of drugs.
Fatal stabbing
Joza detectives have arrested a male in his early 30s following the fatal stabbing of his brother last Saturday in Extension 7 in Joza . It is alleged that the suspect had been drinking at a local tavern, and on returning home a fight broke out at the gate between the two.
Both of them were allegedly under the influence of alcohol. During the fight the younger brother stabbed his older brother, who is in his late 40s, in the chest. He died at the scene. A murder docket is being investigated. The suspect will appear in the Grahamstown Magistrates court soon
A 24-year-old-man appeared in the Grahamstown Magistrates court yesterday following his arrest by members of the Joza detectives during an intense investigation.
This followed detectives chasing up information on a recent housebreaking case which occured in Extension 7 during the middle if May, where household items and appliances valued at over R120 000 were stolen while the family was out of town.
The detectives' investigations led them to a house in Extension 7 where some of the property was hidden. The suspects were still at large.
On the same day a robbery was reported and on further investigation it was discovered that the suspect sold a TV that was stolen in the housebreaking case to a local businessman. The approximate value of the TV was R 20 000.
During the sale the suspect robbed his potential customer of an undisclosed amount of cash. During a follow up of the Robbery investigation the stolen Plasma TV an LG 50inch and more stolen items were recovered.
The following day a Hi-Fi system, microwave and clothing belonging to the victim were recovered in the suspect’s room. Approximate value if the recoveries is over R70 000.
The suspect who was arrested has recently been released on parole. He faces a charges of housebreaking and theft as well as a charge of Robbery. The accused has been remanded in custody and bail was denied.
