"Following an emergency meeting at City Hall on Friday it has been agreed that from yesterday (Monday 23 May) for as long as necessary, valves will be opened/ closed to ensure that residents in roads suffering extensive water outages are guaranteed water for a couple of hours, three days per week.
The roads affected are in the Somerset Heights area, and the affect of this may be that other roads in that area may have a temporary drop in water pressure or even a water outage.
The hours are Monday, Wednesday, Friday 12noon to 2pm.
In the meantime, Makana Municipality reminds everyone that water restrictions still apply and that the use of hose pipes is breaking the law. On a more community-focused note, everyone using a hosepipe is causing near neighbours to go without water.
The prognosis is that the overall water situation will improve greatly over the next 6 weeks as various important issues are attended to – including the break in the pipe to Intermediate Dam, replacement of a huge T- joint which links east and west Grahamstown, and re-lining of High Level Dam.
People attending the emergency meeting said it helped to have a fuller picture, and GRA will be asking Makana to arrange more meetings duly advertised out for different parts of town. It will also allow you to ask questions, make comments and suggestions.
If you have water – please think about your usage levels as it affects the pressure for others, and some still have none. We know there are problems with leaks, and they are being fixed, but that is part of a two year programme. Your usage now is what counts for your neighbours please."
