Smoke from a fire on the mountain above Stone Crescent Hotel outside Grahamstown on Sunday 15 May spread in a north-westerly direction across the N2 and along the Highlands Road; however, the fire remained contained and had died out by Monday morning 16 May.

Owner of Stone Cresecent Tariq Hayat said the Makana Fire Department had responded when the blaze began on the mountain above the hotel, monitoring it until it died out last night. 'There was no danger to the hotel,' he said.

Fire department staff accessed the mountain through his property.

Owner of the adjoining Rivendell property Nick James said it had escaped unscathed. In June 2013 Rivendell was extensively burnt in a fire that ravaged the valley.

A staff member at the Makana Fire Department confirmed that a team had gone out yesterday.

However, the fire had died out itself.

"There was nothing for that shift to hand over to this morning's shift," the officer said.
