Kingswood College hosted its annual Co-Ed 1st team hockey festival over the past weekend. The festival is comprised of 28 teams – 14 girls’ teams and 14 boys’ teams.

Over the course of the last ten years this prestigious event has grown to include teams from as far afield as Zimbabwe, Western Cape, Durban and Johannesburg – not to mention a host of teams from the Eastern Cape.

The festival has become popular among visiting schools, particularly because of the competitive yet friendly atmosphere that exists between all the teams and coaches present.

Matches started on Thursday, 14 April and ended on Sunday, 17 April, with the Kingswood, Rhodes University and DSG (Friday’s games only) Astros playing hosts to the games.

In the boys’ section, St Andrew’s College, Glenwood High and York seemed to emerge as the strongest schools ’ while in the girls’ section Parel Vallei and Kingswood seemed to dominate proceedings.

The Kingswood boys’ side were competitive whilst playing some attractive hockey in patches – they managed 1 win, 3 draws and 2 losses during the festival. The Kingswood girls’ side on the other hand, managed five wins against Glenwood House, Cambridge, Cornwall Hill, HeronBridge and Gelvandale’ losing only to the impressive Parel Vallei team.

The event was again a great success for Kingswood College and a fitting tribute to Gregg van Molendorff, founder of the festival and the successful guardian of Kingswood hockey for the last decade.

Van Molendorff has now joined Graeme College as Deputy Headmaster.
