The Rhodes women’s and men’s basketball teams dominated Walter Sisulu University (WSU) on Sunday, winning 34-8 and 52-10 respectively.

Despite their impressive result, women’s captain Lerato Ratshefola admitted there was room for improvement, claiming: “As a team we have had to work a lot on our ball skills and defensive side. However, the one area that required the most work was our communication skills…"

Ratshefola singled out three players for praise, stating: “After this match, I am most proud of player 10 (Tanaka Mashamhanda); 12 (Nomonde Simelane); and 9 (Khanyi Momoti). These ladies scored the most goals and worked very hard through the game.”

The men’s team started off rather slowly in their game against WSU. Captain Arnold Mlandeli said that the slow start resulted in the team scoring less than they were capable of.

Mlandeli also had a special message for one of his players, gushing: “One player who stood out in the game was Nathi Mgaga, [a first year student]who seems to be getting better by the game.”

Both the men and women will look to continue their winning form and improve even more ahead of Wednesday’s (27 April) away games against Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University.
