Shandis Football Club struggle past determined Muslim Student Association (MSA) with a 1-0 win to proceed into the next round of Rhodes Internal league soccer, knockout stages.
One goal in the second half from Shandis was worthy enough to book them a place into the next round of the knockout stages. The match took place on the Rhodes Prospect Field on Monday evening.
Shandis started on the brighter side after forcing a great one-hand save to the left from the MSA keeper early in the first half. A hard and low cross form the left from Shandis winger almost resulted into an own goal after an MSA defender blasted the ball away for a corner.
MSA was lucky not to be punished after a sloppy goal kick was intercepted just outside the 18 yard box, only to see a rushed shot out for a MSA goal kick. The sides went into the break 0-0.
Shandis continued from where they left off in the second half, but their striker lacked composure to score from a one on one situation with the goalkeeper.
Shandis finally got the breakthrough after MSA failed to clear their lines from a corner and saw a snapshot land in the back of the MSA net with the keeper’s feet rooted to the ground.
Shandis players missed a few more sitters which would have put the game to bed, while MSA attacked the goal line area but never really made the Shandis keeper work. The final whistle blew with Shandis holding on to a 1-0 victory.
One of the Shandis forwards, "Sailor" Mbokanemagcina admitted that “we underestimated them (MSA) but we went through,” with a sigh of relief.
