In just over two weeks on Sunday, 24 April morning golf gives way to cycling when the picturesque setting of the Belmont Golf Club transforms into the start and finish of the Belmont Valley MTB Challenge, Grahamstown's new cycling event.

The event is organised by Albany Saints and Sinners Multisport Club partnering with main sponsor, Pam Golding Properties, Grahamstown.

The Club is offering cash prizes for men's and women's winners in each of the three races.

Riders completing the 15km, 40km and 70km races will enjoy a fast finish over the bridge below the greens, where they will be welcomed by agents from Pam Golding Properties, Grahamstown handing out race medals and Twizza sponsored drinks.

Besides Pam Golding Properties and The Belmont Golf Club, local businesses, including farmers, have come out big in support of the first edition of the Belmont Valley MTB Challenge.

Belmont Valley and Manley Flats farmers Dave Duncan and Rodney and Leonie Yendall are opening private land for riding on the day. This makes it possible to offer riders a choice of three different routes of varying difficulty, using a network of farm tracks and trails linked with sections of dirt road.

The staff of Buco, Hi Q, Pick n Pay, De Jager Lordan, PG Glass and Pam Golding Properties will also be busy handing out drinks and encouragement at the water points each business is sponsoring.

Meanwhile, marshals from Grahamstown Round Table will keep riders on course and St John Ambulance and Provincial Traffic Services will be on hand to assist with safety and emergencies.

Organisers expect most participants to come from the cycling hubs of the region, Port Elizabeth and East London, but entries already include riders from as far away as Franschoek in the Western Cape.
