"Sbu from La Scala" (looking suspiciously like local singing talent and VG choir director and music teacher, Sbu Mkhize) sang for his supper – or, at least, high tea – this past weekend when he serenaded an appreciative audience in the elegant surroundings of Hill Street Manor.
"High Tea with a Tenor" was a ladies only event – in honour of the leap year ("it means we can do anything we want to", said organiser Este Coetzee) – presented by the Rotary Club of Grahamstown, Sunset.
The aim was to raise money for a Youth Leadership Camp to be held later this year by the Club.
Tea and delicious sweet and savoury snacks were provided by Rotary members to keep a wrapt audience refreshed while Sbu, accompanied by Peter Breetzke, delighted them with songs ranging from "Violette" by Scarlatti to "Be My Love" made famous by Mario Lanza.
A grand total of R2050 was raised on the day.
Este says she is planning more fund-raisers particularly aimed at women.
"Many women say there aren't enough opportunities to get together in their area. Last year we did the belly dancing evening for women only and people straight away said 'when is the next thing?' So there will be more. Watch this space."
Certainly, the ladies loved Sbu from La Scala as tickets were sold out long before the event. If you missed out, do not despair. Sbu will be singing in the Rotary Club of Grahamstown's Variety Show at the Monument on 27 May – where all proceeds will go to Hospice.
Now watch Sbu (from La Scala) singing "Violette" by Alessandro Scarlatti.
