The good news for some motorists was that the price of petrol went down from 2 March.

However, as announced by the Department of Energy, the cost of diesel and paraffin increased.

The pump price of petrol 95 Octane and 93 Octane decreased by 69.00c/l. The maximum retail price of liquid petroleum gas (LPGas) also decreased by 120.00c/kg.

The wholesale price of diesel, 0.05% sulphur and 0.005% sulphur, increased by 15.00c/l and 14.00c/l respectively and the wholesale price of illuminating paraffin increased by 17.00c/l and the single maximum national retail price (SMNRP) by 23.00c/l.

The decrease was due to the fact that the average international product prices of petrol decreased while the cost of diesel and Illuminating paraffin increased during the period under review, the Department said in a media release. The crude oil price increased on average compared to the previous pricing period mainly due to rumours that OPEC might cut production.

"In addition, the Rand strengthened against the US Dollar, on average, when compared to the previous period," the Department said.
