A Grahamstown principal has urged pupils to walk to school in groups after a boy was robbed by armed men on his way to school this morning, Monday 1 February. And police have appealed to the community to come forward with information that may help in tracing the suspects and recovering the stolen goods.

"We are outraged that a learner of PJ was mugged, on his way to school this morning," Retief told Grocott's Mail. "Unfortunately as a school, we cannot prevent incidents like this happening. We can only pray that our learners escape unharmed."

Crime Intelligence Officer Captain Milanda Coetzer said SAPS Grahamstown were investigating a case of robbery with a firearm after a 15-year-old pupil from PJ Olivier was walking to school from Campbell Street, along Glanville Street, early this morning.

"He was suddenly accosted by two men, one with a knife and the other a firearm who robbed him of his tablet," Coetzer said. "He is unable to provide a clear description of his assailants at this time."

Retief emphasised that all school children are vulnerable and urged them not to walk alone.

"We appeal to all parents to make sure that their children walk in groups to school," Retief said. "School safety is a high priority at our school and we will take added measures to inform our learners how to handle similar situations."

Retief thanked members of the Sunnyside Neighbourhood Watch and the SAPS for their swift response and support.

Coetzer said, "The Sunnyside community and commuters in Beaufort Street are requested to contact the police should they have any information which may assist with the tracing and apprehension of the two suspects and the recovery of the tablet."
