The six athletes from Grahamstown who took part in the Standard Bank Ironman 70.3 South Africa (known as the half-Ironman) in East London last Sunday all finished the course.
The six athletes from Grahamstown who took part in the Standard Bank Ironman 70.3 South Africa (known as the half-Ironman) in East London last Sunday all finished the course.
The event started out from Orient Beach and the windy conditions made the 1.9km swim one of the toughest ever
. The wind got stronger during the 90km cycle leg, with athletes battling against it during the first half (along the N2 to the Berlin off ramp) but enjoying some help on the way back with the wind behind them.
There were then two loops along the Orient Beach and Bunkers Hill, to make up the 21km run.
First local home was Terri-Lynn Penney who has now taken part in – and finished – all nine half-Ironman events in East London. Next local home was Grant Wolff who was finishing his sixth. Both he and Penney broke six hours.
Battling a foot injury, Megan Hobson enjoyed a good swim and strong cycle to enable her to walk the 21km, for her seventh half-Ironman finish.
Carey Pohl and Jayne Burden both finished their first half-Ironman outings, while Catherine Deiner completed her second.
