The case of 79 people arrested in connection with the looting of spaza shops in Grahamstown was postponed for 12 January 2016 at the Magistrate's Court today, Tuesday 8 December.

The suspects were arrested on 21 October and released on free bail by magistrate Nomnikelo Jebese on 30 October.

The group returned to court and Jebese said their case was still being investigated. They were charged with public violence.

One of them did not go to court because he has left to undergo initiation.

Jebese said she would authorise a warrant of arrest against him.

The magistrate said she understood the importance to families of traditional initiation; however, she said, "I made it clear that people should negotiate with the court for such things.

"When he comes back I want him here at the court," said Jebese.
