Ashlin Moolman, 21, was killed and his friend Curt Cannon, a matric pupil at Graeme College, was seriously injured when a vehicle travelling along Currie Street hit them around 4am Saturday 19 September.
Grahamstown Crime Intelligence Office Milanda Coetzer said at the time that Ashlin had died at the scene and that a case of culpable homicide had been opened.
“The driver handed himself over to SAPS,” Coetzer said. The man is 30 years old, she said soon after the incident.
In court on Friday 4 December, it was determined that the accused had not been driving the car on that day, but had been a passenger. The accused claimed he had been sleeping when the incident occurred and couldn't recall who the driver was.
The court withdrew the case.
Further investigation would be done to determine the driver who killed Moolman and injured Cannon.
Speaking to Grocott’s Mail after the court had withdrawn the case, Cannon said it was disappointing that the driver responsible for Moolman's death had not yet been arrested.
“All I want is justice to take its course. Now I will only write my matric exams next year because of that accident.
"I was seriously injured and had to stop studying.
"The delay has cost me a lot because next year I was going to be doing something else.
"The memory of that accident is still in my mind,” said the Graeme College pupil.
