St Andrew’s College will host the annual South African Schools’ Boat Race, to be held along the Kowie River in Port Alfred, on 4 and 5 December.

The Boat Race started in 2000 at Misverstandt Dam in the Cape, when ten schools participated. The original plan was that the event would be hosted by the four main rowing provinces on a rotational basis. However, the event on the Kowie River in 2001 proved so successful that the South African Schools Rowing Union decided to continue to hold the regatta in Port Alfred.

The format of the race is modelled on the Oxford/Cambridge Boat Race where a time trial heads race takes place on the Friday afternoon and, on the Saturday, the finals are raced side-by-side with crews paired off based on the times achieved on the Friday.

This year will see a total of 23 schools competing for the various awards in the Junior Men’s’ First VIII and Junior Women’s First Quad events.
