Learners from various schools are currently painting T-shirts in an initiative organised by the Village Scribe Association’s Awarenet project.

Larissa Willy, Village Scribe’s fundraising and public relations volunteer from Germany, said the shirt painting is “in remembrance of Nelson Mandela and his famous batik shirts”.

The learners will present their shirts in the form of a fashion show next week, before the start of the end of year exams. The primary schools involved are CM Vellem, Good Shepherd, Archie Mbolekwa, Ntaba Maria and Seventh Day Adventist.

Once completed, the shirts will be donated to the Home of Joy “since we thoroughly enjoyed the cooperation with them when we celebrated the International Day of Peace in September,” said Willy, adding that the last project of the year is always Mandela related because of the anniversary of death in December.

"What I like about the shirts is how they are done. Their colours and the way they glow.

The person that did those shirts was really creative at designing. Those shirts represent us as African people and they represent our culture.

They remind us of our history as South African people," says Sompani Lisakhanya from Archie Mbolekwa School.

“On behalf of the kids and everyone involved in this fantastic project, we would especially like to thank our donor VetVital for their generous support. Thanks to their involvement, we were able to buy enough shirts for all the kids, including the fabric paint and to organise the fashion show next week,” said Willy.
