The stormy weather last night Sunday 1 November and a night of heavy drinking proved a lethal cocktail for a man found dead this morning.

Eyewitnesses said the man had left the place he'd been drinking to go home, but because he was so drunk, he passed out in the street, close to CM Vellem school in Joza's B Section. There he was left to the mercy of last night's strong winds and heavy rains.

"We were coming home when we saw him sleeping in the street. It was around midnight," said the woman who asked not to be named.

"In the morning after 5am a man who was passing by took him into a yard.

"People in that house didn't see him since it was still very early in the morning.

"He died there in that yard and he was really wet at that time," said the woman.

People in the area said there had been no foul play. They said the man had died because of the cold and rain.

Grahamstown police spokesperson Captain Mali Govender had not yet replied to an email asking for confirmation of the incident at the time of publishing this story.
