The Cycle of Knowledge are holding their end of year spoken word and open mike performance at the Eastern Star Gallery (Anglo-African Street) at 6pm this evening. Entrance is free and everyone is welcome.

The Cycle of Knowledge is a community engagement partnership between the English Department and the Writers' Movement of Joza. The poetry group consists of university students, secondary school students and poets from the local community. One of the people behind the initiative, Deborah Seddon, who is part of the Rhodes English Department says, “The collective's work is informed by community engagement scholarship that advocates the formation of strategic partnerships for the mutual education of all participants”.

The weekly sessions of the Cycle of Knowledge provide a range of educational activities around writing, reading, and performing poetry. These include discussions of the work of local and international poets, creative writing exercises such as timed free-writing, poetry ciphers and open mike sessions, editing and group feedback sessions on individual works, performances on campus, in town, and at local schools, recording work in audio and video formats, collating biographies of the poets involved and a history of the group's activities.

The group meets on Tuesday evenings in term time from 5:30-7:30pm, shifting weekly between meetings in the English Department Common Room and meetings at the Assumption Development Centre in Joza.

You can see some of their poets' work on their YouTube channel or follow them on Facebook. The end of year performance will showcase a range of local and student poets. Refreshments will be served.
