A Grahamstown man accused of killing his nine-month old child appeared briefly in the Grahamstown Magistrate's court on Thursday 8 October.

The case was postponed for next week Thursday (15 October). The 32 year-old will stay behind bars until then, when he will appear for a bail application.

Grahamstown police spokesperson, Captain Mali Govender, said the incident happened on the evening of Friday 2 October at 7pm. "The nine month old victim was strapped on his mothers back when they left the home of the baby's maternal grandmother together with his father and a friend.

"According to information received, there was an argument between the parents of the child regarding a cellphone that the child's mother had left at her mothers home.

"She refused to return to fetch the phone. The argument grew and the friend left. The suspect then started to assault the victim. She fell to the ground and was further assaulted. He fled the scene.

"It was further discovered that the child had died," said Govender. A case of murder was opened by the Grahamstown police following the incident, but the police did not find the man immediately.

Govender said the man was arrested on Wednesday afternoon after his child was buried. Police said his family brought him to the station.
