The Puku Children’s Literature Foundation announced the top three winners of the Puku Story Competition on 25 September 2015 in Cape Town.

The three winners were selected from the top 10 stories that were shortlisted by the judges. The competition was open to young people between the ages of 13 and 19. Only stories written in isiXhosa were considered.

All stories had to be the original work of the writer. Sponsored by Redisa (Recycling and Economic Development Initiative of South Africa), and supported by the Nal’ibali Reading-for-Enjoyment campaign, this competition not only celebrates and preserves the isiXhosa language and rich heritage of storytelling, but raises awareness of the importance of taking care of the environment – ultimately developing young people’s language, literature and love of the environment.

    The top winners were:

1st Place: Nwabisa Gasa of Chris Hani Arts & Culture Focus School in Khayelitsha, Cape Town.

2nd Place: Amkele Nokrala of Vuyiseka Secondary School in Phillippi, Cape Town.

3rd Place: Simamkele Socishe of Lawson Brown High School in Port Elizabeth.
