South African thriller iNumber Number was a winner in the 11th edition of the prestigious annual African Movie Academy Awards (AMAA) in Port Elizabeth last weekend.
The film, which stars Israel Makoe and Hlubi Mboya as gangsters plotting a cash-in-transit heist, received 12 nominations. A record 800 films were entered in the awards this year.
iNumber Number won the award for achievement in visual effects. Port Elizabeth played host to more than1,500 creative professionals from across the globe who converged on the city to honour the men and women producing more movies per year than Hollywood.
The 11th annual African Movie Academy Awards, dubbed the “African Oscars” by CNN, took place on Saturday, 26 September at the Boardwalk International Convention Centre.
Peace Anyiam-Osigwe, founder and CEO of the awards, said Africans need to come together to do away with borders. Despite a few hiccups leading up to the event, including a late start to the evening and many nominees experiencing visa challenges, the awards were well attended.
Guests were entertained by Asanda Mqiki, Edge and KCEE. The African Movie Academy Awards is the biggest gathering of filmmakers from across the African continent and the rest of the world.
The 184 nominees across the 24 categories attended the evening, as well as the judges and invited guests, including many A-list celebrities.
