No less than seven of the ten finalists in the Puku Children’s Literature Foundation Story Competition are from the Eastern Cape. The winners will be announced on 25 September 2015 in Cape Town.
The theme of the competition was "Celebrating our Legacy and Inventing the Future”, with a focus on the environment.
It was open to young people between the ages of 13 and 19 year for stories between 500 – 1000 in isiXhosa.
They were encouraged to celebrate the isiXhosa linguistic and cultural legacy as well as how they would like to preserve this in the future.
They could also write about how to take care of the environment to make the world a better place for the next generations.
"The story writing competition encourages youth to write well-crafted, entertaining stories in the language closest to the hearts of children and young people. This will help us equip our children to meet the greatest environmental challenges of our time,” says Elinor Sisulu, Chairperson of Puku.
It was sponsored by REDISA (Recycling and Economic Development Initiative of South Africa), and supported by the Nal’ibali Reading-for-Enjoyment campaign.
“As an initiative focused on understanding the value that can be derived from waste, REDISA is committed to educating the youth about the importance of recycling and reusing products and this partnership allows us to do that in a fun and engaging way,” says Hermann Erdmann, CEO at REDISA.
The top 10 stories were selected by a panel of six judges from a total of (240) entries.
Each of these finalists will receive a medal and certificate. The top entrant will receive a grand prize of R10 000. The second prize winner will receive R5000 and the third prize winner, R3000.
