Home-town hero, Scott Van Breda, was a shining light once again for the EP Kings as they claimed a 32-24 win against the Free State Cheetahs at the Nelson Mandela Bay stadium in Port Elizabeth on Friday.

The win was EP King’s first in this year’s Absa Currie Cup. Van Breda, a Kingwood College old boy, started the game at full-back for the home side and delivered arguably the best performance of his entire professional career.

He was solid under the high-ball and gained a decent amount of ground with ball in hand. His most impressive display was delivered courtesy of his on-form boot.

He scored an amazing 22 points which included six penalties and two conversions. Even more impressive, he did not miss any of his attempts at goal.

His incredible performance was key to the Kings’ victory, especially as they were reduced to 14 men for most of the second half of the game when centre, JP Du Plessis, was given his marching orders for an alleged punch thrown at a Cheetahs player in the ruck.

The decision remains highly controversial as footage from the TMO was inconclusive.

Van Beda was the highest-scoring player in the Currie Cup competition last weekend. He also leap-frogged up to sixth on the overall points-scoring chart, despite not starting every game for his side.

Tries from wingers Siyanda Grey and Luther Obi also helped the Kings to victory. It seems that Van Breda will now have cemented his place in the starting line-up for the team.

If results continue in this vein for the Eastern Cape side, they can feel confident heading into the 2016 Super Rugby campaign.
