Hospitality establishments in and around Grahamstown had an excellent showing at the Lilizela Tourism Awards at the Boardwalk Convention Centre in Port Elizabeth last Thursday night.
There were five Grahamstown area finalists in the accommodation awards – A Whitehouse Guest House, Hill Street Manor Guest House, Pumba Game Reserve – Msenge Bush Lodge and Water Lodge, Amakhala Game Reserve and Thomas Baines Reserve.
Hill Street Manor Guesthouse won the category, Bed and Breakfast Star Grading 4.
Amakhala's Quatermain's won the category, Camp Game Lodge Star Grading 3 and Pumba Msenge Bush Lodge won the Lodge Star Grading 5 category.
MyPond Hotel in Port Alfred won the Hotel Star Grading 4 category. The ceremony was attended by Eastern Cape MEC for Economic Development, Environmental Affairs and Tourism (DEDEAT) Sakhumzi Somyo and Deputy Minister of Tourism, Thoko Xasa.
The awards are hosted by DEDEAT and the Eastern Cape Parks and Tourism Agency and are described by the organisers as "a platform to recognise and celebrate tourism players and businesses that work passionately to make Eastern Cape and South Africa one of the preferred destinations of choice in the world".
190 entrants were competing for honours in categories such as service excellence, sustainable development and entrepreneurship. Under 'Universal Accessibility', in the category Accommodation: mobility, Hluleka Nature reserve was the winner.
