Bafana Bafana have not covered themselves in glory in the African Cup of Nations for several years, but they can give their supporters cause for hope when they continue their qualifying campaign on Saturday 5 September (SuperSport4, 6.30pm).

There will be no easy pickings, however, against Mauritania in Mauritania because the home side showed how dangerous they can be in losing just 1-0 to the powerful Cameroon outfit. After SA were held to a goalless draw at home by Gambia, the pressure is rising for Bafana Bafana to show they are among the heavyweights of African soccer.

The rugby Currie Cup enters round five and there will be plenty at stake as the teams continue to joust for the playoffs. The Blue Bulls and the Golden Lions have leapt ahead of the rest and it would be a major surprise if they failed to consolidate their positions at the top this weekend.

The Bulls host the Cheetahs on Friday 4 September (SS1, 7pm) and will be looking to keep their perfect record intact, as will the Lions against the EP Kings in Johannesburg on Saturday 5 September (SS1, 7pm).

In Cape Town, Western Province will be aiming to emerge from the chasing pack when they host Griquas on Saturday (SS1, 5pm). WP made a slick start last month against Griquas, but have slipped in recent losses to the Bulls and the Cheetahs, and the men from Kimberley could feel the backlash.

The first shots of the domestic cricket season will be fired when the inaugural Africa T20 Cup kicks off on Saturday 5 September. The tournament is essentially a clash of South Africa's provincial sides, as opposed to franchise teams, with a sprinkling of high quality players in the mix.

It will be an ideal pipe-opener to the season and WP and Northerns get the ball rolling in Benoni on Saturday (SS8, 9.15am), followed by Easterns versus Zimbabwe (SS8, 12.55pm). There is another double-header on Sunday – Zimbabwe v WP (SS8, 09.45am) and Easterns v Northerns (SS8, 1.25pm).

In the boxing ring, three of South Africa’s most prominent fighters feature on an entertaining international tournament in East London on Friday 4 September (SS9, 7pm).

Topping the bill is big-punching southpaw Zolani Tete. The former IBF flyweight and super-flyweight champion hasn’t boxed since his devastating knockout of Paul Butler in March, but will be keen to show his credentials against Mexican opponent Olguin Ramirez Diuhl.

Xolisani Ndongeni, from nearby Duncan Village but now based in Johannesburg, will have his first fight since beating former champion Mzonke Fana a few months ago when he faces Miguel Angel Escalada of Buenos Aires.

In the third bout, southpaw Nkosinathi Joyi is a highly regarded former world champion who enjoys huge popularity in the Eastern Cape, but desperately needs to re-discover his best form against Sinethemba Magibisela to escape the journeyman ranks.
